Flag Drop Box
HALO partnered with Akron community members to create a drop box for the retirement of worn American flags. It is the only one of its kind located at a school in the state of Ohio. Students at Resnik Community Learning Center in Akron voted on the wrap for the steel box, which was made by metalsmithing students at the career center. The project and dedication ceremony was a wonderful community effort, made possible through the contributions of Akron Public Schools, Sgt. Todd Fitzwater, MGySgt. John MacLean and Cadets: East High School CLC Marine Corps JROTC, Boy Scouts of America Troop 1, Cub Scouts Pack 3001, Orval Hawkins and students from the East High School CLC welding program, APS Career Education, Flags of Freedom/ Steve Toohey, Power Media, the Alcoa foundation, and Resnik Community Learning Center students and staff.
The Flight 93 Mobile Museum
The Flight 93 Mobile Museum will be an educational vehicle to teach students about the valor displayed aboard United Flight 93 in coordination with the National Park Service and the Flight 93 National Memorial. For almost 17 years now, the HALO Foundation has taken students to the Flight 93 crash site in Shanksville, Pennsylvania so that they learn about this heroic event. In addition to providing a historically accurate account of the events that occurred aboard Flight 93, the Mobile Museum will exhibit responses from the students involved with “93 cents for Flight 93”. Responses will include letters, poems, and quilts created in support of the effort to assist the loved ones of the passengers and crew of Flight 93. The Mobile Museum will visit schools and attend local events across the country. It will also be available to the general public at the MAPS Aviation Museum in Green, Ohio when it is not on the road. The University of Akron has been a critical partner throughout this project and will continue to partner with HALO as the process continues.
